The central idea
The Slav Defense supports d5 with ...c6 and keeps the c8 bishop flexible. Black aims for a sound Queen's Gambit structure while preserving active options for the light-squared bishop.
Typical plans
- Develop the c8 bishop before closing the position with ...e6 when possible.
- Use ...dxc4 or ...e5 according to White's center.
- Maintain pressure on d4 without becoming passive.
Common mistakes
- Holding the pawn on c4 at the cost of development.
- Playing ...e6 automatically and losing the bishop's best route.
- Allowing White to establish a protected center without counterplay.
