The central idea
The Sicilian Defense answers 1.e4 with ...c5 and creates an asymmetrical fight from the first move. Black concedes some central symmetry to gain active counterplay and practical winning chances.
Typical plans
- Challenge White's center with ...d5 or pressure it with piece play.
- Develop the queenside while preparing a safe king.
- Choose a structure that matches the pace of White's attack.
Common mistakes
- Starting a flank attack before solving development and king safety.
- Allowing White to build the ideal e4-d4 center without resistance.
- Memorizing a variation while missing the pawn-break purpose behind it.
