The central idea
The Pirc Defense allows White to occupy the center before Black attacks it with flexible piece play and pawn breaks. Black's compensation is dynamic pressure, not immediate space.
Typical plans
- Fianchetto the king bishop and castle safely.
- Challenge the center with ...c5 or ...e5 at the right moment.
- Use queenside or kingside counterplay according to White's setup.
Common mistakes
- Waiting so long that White can advance without challenge.
- Launching ...f5 before the king is safe.
- Treating the fianchetto as a complete plan rather than the beginning of one.
