The central idea
The London System builds a dependable structure with d4, Nf3, and Bf4. The setup is easy to recognize, but strong play still depends on reacting to Black's ...c5, ...Qb6, and central breaks.
Typical plans
- Develop the dark-squared bishop before e3 when the position allows.
- Prepare c4 or e4 when a more ambitious center is needed.
- Use the stable structure to improve pieces, not to stop calculating.
Common mistakes
- Playing Bf4 and e3 without noticing ...Qb6 pressure.
- Assuming the same setup works against every Black structure.
- Waiting too long to challenge the center.
