The central idea
The Panov Attack creates an isolated-queen-pawn structure and more open lines than the quiet Caro-Kann branches. White gets active piece play; Black aims to use the IQP as a target and generate counterplay.
Typical plans
- Develop rapidly into the open central files.
- Use the isolated d-pawn as a source of space or a long-term target, depending on the side.
- Keep the queenside pieces coordinated before tactical operations.
Common mistakes
- Treating the isolated pawn as automatically weak or automatically strong.
- Opening lines while behind in development.
- Ignoring the central break that changes the structure.
